London attack

Posted in Death, England, Terrorism with tags , , , , , , , on March 23, 2017 by MISANTHROPIST

I haven’t written a post about any current event for a long time, unfortunately the one time I do it’s a terrorist attack. Thankfully nobody I know was harmed, very few harmed at all. I imagine that’s no condolence for the families of those killed yesterday. Fortunately officers managed to lay him the fuck out before he could kill anybody else.

The sun came up today and London continued as it would on any other day. It’s just a shame that we live in a world where this sort of thing is a possibility. That said Trump taking Khan’s comments out of context… unfortunately we live in a world where President Trump is also a possibility. I’m too focused on cleaning the shit in my own backyard to offer my condolences to those who did not vote for him. At least your President was voted for.

In the wake of this attack I am left with many questions. Questions about the nature of the attack itself, what new measures will be put in place under ‘national security.’

Then there’s Facebook, the filter which I personally find half assed as a show of unity. Solidarity just a click away but hey whatever makes people feel better. Then there’s the whole report yourself as safe feature, never seen this one before. The idea in principle is a good one but if you’re unemployed and from Watford I know you’re safe.

I also feel for the Muslim people of this country who will suffer abuse as a result of this attack. It’s a virtual certainty, just as Europeans suffered abuse after the leave vote. I haven’t really checked the news since, I’m waiting for more information to come out regarding the perpetrator, sources to be corroborated etc. News that I did read in the immediate aftermath was chaotic to say the least. I’ve created a terrorism category for this blog, I hope this is the only post under it.

I wish the injured a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with the families of those killed. As attacks go this is minor but to the families of those killed it’s life changing. I commend the actions of the officer who swiftly dealt with the threat and prevented greater loss of life.

Facebook’s latest feature.

Remember in school when you were given course work? A few of you reading this would have increased the font size to meet the 4 or 5 page requirement. I came across it a few days ago when someone posted something and it came in a larger font, bold, I believed it was a meme generator job or a new app for Facebook.

This was not the case. Now all your bullshit is displayed in a larger, bolder, font. It took me ten minutes to realise that the smaller your word count the larger the font. Your drama and bullshit is now received in bold type. You may feel as if your opinions hold more weight in a larger font.

On the atrocities in France and social media.

Thinking about it, I can’t be the only person on earth who is annoyed by the whole Facebook flag, hashtag solidarity thing. My argument against it is two fold. Sounds like a stupid thing to be annoyed by doesn’t it?

Here is why I feel this way:

Firstly, the whole putting the France filter on your profile picture to show solidarity with the people and victims in France is okay. How do you automate solidarity? Facebook found a way. It’s a simple as a click, it even comes up on your news feed. You’re given an option to change your profile picture without prompting.

To me, a gesture such as this is nice but doesn’t contribute to solving or even adequately addressing the issue at hand. Not only that but if you’re going to make a gesture of solidarity, do it spontaneously. Make the effort, be thoughtful and creative… Not just clicking a button on Facebook. It seems half assed and half hearted. Have some tact and some class.

The second thing is that I don’t believe I should change any aspect of my daily life because of the actions of a terrorist. This might be the first time that ‘keep calm and carry on’ has made sense to me. As I mentioned there are other ways to show respect and solidarity to the victims, survivors and people of France. As stupid and petty as changing your profile picture is, personally, I do not want to give a terrorist. A coward. any of my time.

They do not deserve the recognition unless it’s being tagged as the target of a 500lb laser guided bomb. I know violence is not the answer and will only perpetuate the cycle but I am left to wonder. When do people lose the right to continue to walk the earths surface?

It’s sad that this problem cannot be bombed. It’s an idea and ideas cannot be killed. We are in for a long fight. I also extend my sympathies to the average Muslim who will no doubt suffer as a result of the events in Paris. I can only hope we are smart enough to avoid perpetuating the cycle, although I’m sure this will happen again.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

Facebook, Charity, Nominations and not giving.

I’m tired of Facebook, I really am. I’m not going to go the edgy teenager route and say I’m quitting only to return 24hrs later because what is the point. Annoying as it is Facebook is genuinely useful for communicating quickly with friends across the world. Hard to believe a Misanthrope has friends across the globe isn’t it? Anyway we’re not here to talk about myself or to debate the usefulness of Facebook, today I have a rather specific gripe. It has more to do with the idiots I know than Facebook itself…

Stop nominating me for things, I don’t care what it is. Ice bucket challenge or whatever the new fad is. I’m guessing half of those idiots don’t even know what ALS stands for. It’s nice to donate money to charity but what is it with this fetishistic posting of photographic evidence? It isn’t enough that one has donated, everyone must know about it. When I give money or food to the homeless guy near the station do we take a fucking selfie together for my friends to know about my good deed? Because what’s the point of doing good if nobody can see you doing it?

90% of the people donating are unaware of how much of their donations go to those who need them, forgetting charities have administration costs and sometimes line their own pockets in the process. Nobody is smart about this sort of thing anymore and it hurts my head to think about how stupid people can be sometimes. I’m not doing anything because somebody nominated me and I’m certainly not going to be guilted into donating what little I do have because everybody on Facebook will know if I don’t. This sort of passive-aggressive bullshit makes me hate people and feel negatively towards charitable organizations.

If I give money, I’ll do it on the street where it counts and do it wisely so my charity isn’t taken advantage of. My country has its own problems too, how about we get those homeless people off the streets and into accommodation first?

It Was My Privilege

I want to talk to you all about something that has been on my mind lately, well now its kinda burned into my mind. The image that is burned into my mind is not a good one. The issue is Feminism (I checked my privilege and capitalized it)
I don’t have a problem with women so don’t mistake this whole post for misogyny, I’m all for women having equal rights to men in every area. Wait why the fuck am I apologizing for myself. My mistake, silly me…

I was on Facebook lately and a friend of a friend of mine posted an article in from a well-known US news source, it was about women and their rights. I read it and didn’t agree with everything that was said in it. I especially don’t like the stance that every man is a rapist, so I commented on it. I was then accosted by the girl who posted it. Obviously a feminist. Before I get into anything (I’m not talking specifically about the individual involved) there is a point when feminism becomes radical and then there’s the sad point where feminism becomes misandry. These specific man hating feminists and some of the things they say and promote are completely ridiculous and they make feminists and feminism in general look like a joke, which is the exact opposite of what they want. These ‘feminists’ are why you ladies can’t have nice things. There’s a point when it just becomes war on the danglers in general and you don’t want equal rights but to take away the rights of men.

I think that a woman shouldn’t think every man is a potential rapist, don’t get me wrong I’m a fan of putting the fear of god in people to warn them of potential danger but it gets ridiculous at the point where all men are demonized for the actions of a few animals. The other thing I can’t stand is the cherry picking, its pathetic. You already have a point, no need to dress it up. Then the other thing is being told I’m privileged. Yes I’m white and male and I know that in years gone by this carried privileges but now days this is much less true and where I’m from we’re had multiculturalism and tolerance hammered into us while we were still to young to see color and creed. Where I’m from we’re united in our shitty environment and shitty situation as I said when you’re at the bottom rung of the ladder everyone is on equal footing. Telling me I’m privileged in any way because of the color of my skin or my sex makes me laugh. I invite you to come see where I live, you’ll see my point. We’re all equal in this shit hole.

Another thing is a feminist telling me how she has no rights or how she’s being oppressed… posting her opinions freely on social media, from her cell phone that she owns and paid for with her own money… need I go on?
Sure I recognize that women aren’t completely equal but there are women having their genitals mutilated in Africa, and women who aren’t allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, who can’t go out without the company of a man, women who are really oppressed, the women who jumped under the kings carriage for their rights were oppressed. So sorry you’re not top of the list. right now. Lets worry about the women who have been killed for dishonoring their families or that poor little girl in the news. That’s oppression and you don’t know what the fuck that is. And by god I hope you never do…

The worst thing is that even when you agree with a lot of their points they fuck it up for themselves by being rude or sometimes just plain crazy and for a lot of people it was shocking at first but now its hilarious to the point where feminists in general became massive targets for trolls, so yeah if you sit in your feminism 101 class and look to your left, then look to your right, one of those two women are likely to make you and your sisters look like a joke. You know what warms me the most, when a man and a woman just work together and not against each-other. I find with many feminists the target is the man and not the inequality and I can’t understand why they can’t be fucking polite. When I converse with someone I’m always civil but when you’re being shitty and rude because I disagree with some facets of your belief system, (You know the conspiracy to keep all women down?) That’s when I start being an asshole and you get a little wake up call. If you could talk to me, I may even be able to see your point of view. But no, there’s no moderation with them. I mean shit we’re not the enemy. Not all of us.

I don’t have a problem with the basic ideals of feminism but what I have a problem with is the feminists I’ve described here.
It has been my privilege.

So they retired MSN messenger…

Posted in Social Media, Technology, The Internet. with tags , , , , , , , , , , on January 29, 2013 by MISANTHROPIST

MSN MessengerI’ve complained a few times now that MSN messenger is like a graveyard but I’ve also realized that many people still use this service, just nowhere near as many as it used to be. I heard recently that MSN had decided to retire their messenger service and I must admit I was a little saddened by its departure. I remember many a night spent up at gods knows what hour chatting to friends on MSN. Nowadays we’ve moved on to Facebook and many other services but these come at the price of our privacy.

Many people constantly complain about how invasive Facebook can be, yet we ignore readily available forms of communicating with our friends in favor of this newer social media at the price of our privacy. We bitch and complain but do we even know what we want. Surely if you want privacy you can forgo a few useless features like Farmville in order to ensure our entire lives can’t be looked up by a creepy man with a very specific lack of social skills. Is it too much to ask for our privacy?

All remaining MSN users have been pointed toward Skype and making a Skype account. I don’t really have too many complaints about Skype, as good as it is the service will never be as sturdy or reliable as MSN messenger was or maybe I’m just a Luddite who can’t let go of the past. The saddest part of this is that MSN was still pretty widely used and could still run a scaled down service. It’d still work and it would cost Microsoft less to run and maintain. Part of me just thinks that this was about money. I know Microsoft took over Skype and I don’t really care to know much more than that.

I’ve also read Skype is about as good for privacy as Facebook. Honestly this whole MSN retirement feels like attending a funeral of friend, I’m sad to see it go but I’m also concerned about the lack of privacy in the newer generation of social media. Then again there is one way to ignore it all and that is not participating. I’m heading that way with Facebook I’ve come to realize that I can have all of the things that Facebook provides by bringing together multiple programs/services without the price of my privacy.

Myself and many others are going to miss MSN Messenger,
