Rick and Morty, people and Fandom.

So many years ago someone I knew posted a cover photo on shitbook, an animated picture of a garage open in the moonlight. I knew it was from a show but I’m not one for watching television to be honest. I started looking at Reddit again out of boredom a while back and through Reddit became aware of Rick and Morty. Reddit being Reddit I assumed this was another circle-jerk, which to be accurate, it was.

That put me off of watching it for a long while, Reddit has a tendency to circle-jerk over things that aren’t that funny so I basically couldn’t be bothered. Eventually a friend showed me a few clips during a Friday night, the next night I ended up watching some myself. Two weeks later I found myself bored so I decided to watch a few episodes one night.

A few episodes turned into three quarters of season one, I finished the last quarter a day later. Onto season two which I watched in one night, ending up awake until around 4am. A week ago I got to season 3 episode 4 and in a way I’m glad I haven’t been watching the show the whole time because I haven’t waited for a new season until the current one is over.

The only thing I dislike about Rick and Morty is the pseudointelectuals within the fan base, other than that it’s a very enjoyable show. This lukewarm helping of copypasta will demonstrate the kind of pseudointellectual shit I’m talking about:

The other thing that gets me is fan theories, I understand taking an educated guess at what might happen but developing entire theories around characters, who has that kind of time? I’d rather spend it doing something useful.

Game of thrones fans are definitely the worst so far, I’m not slating the show at all because I’ve enjoyed much of what I’ve seen. Honestly I just don’t have the staying power to sit and watch it, even if I don’t watch it there will be someone who will tell me about it either from the show or having read the books so I’m pretty caught up. I’m also aware that fans of the series really hate spoilers and will react angrily when exposed to them.

That’s another thing I don’t get, being super pissed off by spoilers… If someone is constantly spoiling it I can understand you would be irritated but still it’s funny how emotional people get over spoilers. I can hear spoilers or even read and still appreciate the execution of the scene. Each to their own I guess? I’m still not really one for watching shows but I’ve found something to pass time when I’m bored now.

Fan bases can be crazy. I cringe when I see something like a Rick and Morty tattoo, wearing merchandise or a stranger referencing it in hopes to get a laugh. The same way I cringe when I hear or see memes used IRL. I really enjoy the show myself but the boner Reddit has for Rick and Morty is colossal.

Speaking of fandom it’s ridiculous nowadays the people who have fans. YouTube personalities get fans and merch now. Then again a judge from a reality TV show can become president of the United States so…

Personally I hope the wait for the new season isn’t too long because it’s almost the end of the season. I’ve had archer suggested to me by a friend, another show the jerk is strong for. Bob’s burgers I’m not really sure about, saying that, I’ve never even watched more than a short clip or two and that failed to hook me in the way Rick and Morty did. I may end up giving it another chance at some point if I am bored and desperate enough.

I’m not sure if anyone here has heard of Ugly Americans? My ex girlfriend introduced me to it and we watched season one and I think season 2 but they never renewed it for whatever reason. I enjoyed passing time watching that. I hope they do renew it one day but I highly doubt it, which is a shame really.

For the first time in many years I’ve actually sat down and watched a show, which makes me hope it doesn’t fall into the same traps as many other well known animated comedy has. It’s a little early to say but for now we can only hope.

Do you like Pina Coladas?

The strangest thing happened to me today, I posted on a popular website to meet new people as I’d been alone lately. A woman answered me from Europe and I replied, 12 hours later she got back to me and told me where she was from. In the same message she asked my name which I provided.

She said she could relate to my post a lot with what had been going on in her life. I felt like I knew her, it felt very familiar. She replies with my full name and I return with my nickname for her. It turns out to be my ex girlfriend who I just broke up with.

We talked a lot after that, I thought she would just stop replying but we talked and had the most meaningful conversation we’ve had in months. I’ve felt nothing but either determined, pissed off or caffeinated for a while now so you can imagine. Suddenly emotions.

We reconciled and she seems to have grown since we have been away. We spoke the whole evening and we were honest with one another, I feel like this she hasn’t let me in like this in a while. A few things occurred to me during the conversation that may be important.

If we hadn’t spoken today we may not have spoken for months or ever. She said she almost deleted it because she was tired but she finished it before bed. Today she told me she loved me and when she found out other women were interested she opened up and said she was afraid of losing me.

She was afraid that by the time she is okay it will be too late. I’ll be gone and she isn’t half wrong. I could have easily done so if I had to. It’s been a fucking weird day for me. We’re not back together but this is a start. She needs to learn to let me in, I know it’s not on purpose.

She said that people haven’t been the best to her when she opened up in the past. I promptly reminded her that I’m not people. I pointed out how she spoke about loving me, fell asleep with me and spoke about us having a life together but she hasn’t let me in. Paradox much?

She seemed to understand this logic. Again a step forward. She’s changed a little and for the better but she’s still herself. I do see through her, I just wish she would tell me rather than let me read her. I’m willing to be patient and assured her that I’m not going to disappear on her. She misses me and loves me, I guess that’s a start.

She finally dropped the bullshit and pulled back when she realised I could see someone else. Why should it have taken so much for her to do this. I had to reassure her that of all people I will accept her for who she is and how she feels. Does she not think that’s important to me?

I have to get the fucking difficult ones… despite being difficult she’s a sweet woman. Warm, caring in her own way. I guess we’ll see where it goes. This lifts a weight off me, I’ll admit.

I still don’t like pina coladas though…

Facebook’s latest feature.

Remember in school when you were given course work? A few of you reading this would have increased the font size to meet the 4 or 5 page requirement. I came across it a few days ago when someone posted something and it came in a larger font, bold, I believed it was a meme generator job or a new app for Facebook.

This was not the case. Now all your bullshit is displayed in a larger, bolder, font. It took me ten minutes to realise that the smaller your word count the larger the font. Your drama and bullshit is now received in bold type. You may feel as if your opinions hold more weight in a larger font.

So my friend just made a porno.

Yeah…

Apparently she’s a lovely girl and the camera man was a good laugh. Hopefully he can earn himself some money. He just was just a part of a professional porno.

Facebook.

Never wanted it, always complained about it. Hate it even more so than ever.

If you’ve been with me for some time you may remember me complaining how my ex fiancĂ©e went about coercing a drunk, younger, me into getting a Facebook. Or rather just setting it up for me…

There was a time when I was quite active on Facebook, when it was a tool which was useful to me. It allowed me to converse with my friends in America and more recently the ones in Brazil.

Of late I’ve not had much contact from any of the individuals I met during my travels. Friendships are ephemeral after all I guess. No me importa nada mas. It isn’t an issue, just that now I have no further use for Facebook.

I’ll keep it as an alternative avenue of contact but I have no real use for it anymore. Half of the crap on there is click bait or politics. It’s just boring and I’m really growing to hate it with a passion. I still wish I had been firmer with my first answer which was, for the record, No.

You had one job YouTube.

Recently I began thinking to myself, if only there were a way to watch my favourite things without hearing about the next Ancient Aliens special or whatever bullshit they are putting on the ad-breaks. My girlfriend watches a lot of documentary type stuff and my sister is an internet tv regular so I thought they would be the best people to ask, turns out my sister is useless if it isn’t TV programs you’re looking for and my girlfriend uses YouTube. I prefer watching factual/educational things because if I’m going to waste an hour of my life I may aswell learn something along the way.

I think it has to do with the imagery of the natural world. I find it relaxing and some of the scenery is truly beautiful, in a way I takes me to a place I’d rather be. Brazil has me craving more green space, London can be so grey and depressing at times. I eventually found myself on YouTube where I encountered a problem. YouTube seems very inconsistent at times with the odd episode of a David Attenborough series here and there. I just can’t seem to find anything I’m specifically interested in, even the Dinosaur/Paleontology thing I watched was a let-down. I’m surprised by that, I don’t remember Horizon being a cheap rip-off of Walking with plasticine. (My affectionate name for the BBC series Walking With Dinosaurs.)

I can’t seem to find any decent websites for that sort of watching, maybe I just need to look harder but thus far YouTube has been a huge let-down, either that or I’m just looking in all the wrong places. All the Attenborough series I’ve seen on there tend to be older or just the less interesting ones. I’m kinda disappointed actually… seems as if YouTube is only good for music, watching animals do stupid things and watching people hurt themselves.
